Leadership Development
As part of the current chapter initiative to recruit new leaders and find ways to retain existing leaders, I am reforming the Leadership Development Committee. To make this committee as broad-based as possible, I hope to include representatives from as many chapter subcommittees as possible. Since I am not aware of the talents and abilities of many folks other than Northern Hikes, I am seeking your help in recommending individuals who would be willing and able to help develop and train new leaders and provide assistance to existing leaders. The time commitment would be attendance at 2-3 meetings a year and possibly assisting with workshops. Presently, we run two workshops a year – Wilderness First Aid and Map & Compass, and I plan to run a Leadership Training Workshop this fall. With committee input and assistance, we hope to do more. Teaching opportunities are available, but not required.

Ideally, candidates should be experienced leaders who have shown the ability and willingness to mentor others or provide constructive advice on leadership issues. Mostly, I am looking for individuals who you think can help the chapter develop new leaders. So if you have any names you would like to suggest, please send them to me. Or, if you would rather talk to the individuals first and have them contact me directly, that would be OK, also. I can be reached by email at charlie.killam@gmail.com or by phone at (508) 252-4349.

Thanks in advance for your help.

SOLO Wilderness First Aid Training, April 25-26, 2009
Red Cross first aid training is certainly helpful, but when you are in a backwoods situation, you need more. This course provides the knowledge you will need to deal with medical emergencies when you are more than one hour from medical care. In addition to patient assessment, this course teachs you how to treat immediate life threats, disabling injuries, hypothermia and other environmental hazards, fractures, sprains and more. This two day course was taught at Camp Hoffman in West Kingston, RI. The course was taught by the outstanding instructors from Stonehearth Outdoor Learning Opportunities (SOLO).

Leadership Guidelines and Forms
All activity leaders should be aware of the various guidelines and forms that the AMC organization has provided for Chapters to use to promote safety and to be within the legal bounds and obligations of our organization. These are the catagories that the leaders should be aware of. (All the referenced documents are in pdf format.)

Outdoor Leadership Information
Leaders of outdoors activities must meet certain minimal requirements to be a leader. The overall
Leadership Requirements and Guidelines for volunteer leaders should be read. Each committee, or activity, also has specific leadership requirements in addition to the general requirments. These can be found in the activity home pages which are listed under the drop down menu.

Release Agreements
All activities such as biking, hiking, paddling, etc that involve risk must use the Volunteer Release Agreement form. It is to be read and signed by all participants of the activity, each time the activity is offered.
For major excursions there is a separate release form to be signed for that trip.

Reporting & Communications Information
Any incidents or accidents that occur during an AMC activity should be reported, in addition to any other reports that may have to be filled in, eg. police, hospital, search and rescue, etc.

Further overall information can be obtained from the AMC Outdoors web site.
